WHAT IS CUCKOLD?

In it’s simplest form, “cuckold” refers to a husband who watches his wife have sex with other men. It’s often used as part of a domination fetish with the husband being a submissive observer or participant in his wife’s sexual conquests. Every month, 1.75 million people search some variation of “cuckold”, “cuck” or “cucked” on Pornhub.

In a recent study it was discovered that cuckold is a popular theme when searching for any porn involving married couples. From January 2013 to November 2016, cuckold has grown in popularity by 57%.

But where does this originate?

The term “cuckold” derives from the cuckoo bird, known for laying its eggs in other birds’ nests, symbolizing a man unknowingly raising children not his own. The earliest recorded English usage dates back to around 1250 in the poem The Owl and the Nightingale, where it explored themes of jealousy and male insecurity. By the Renaissance, calling a man a cuckold was a direct attack on his masculinity and honour, often accompanied by the symbolic depiction of horns to signify lost pride.

After the Renaissance, some depictions of cuckoldry began to explore consensual or eroticized dynamics, portraying “contented cuckolds” who participated willingly in their wives’ sexual activities. These representations suggest that cuckoldry was not always about shame but could also reflect kink, desire, and negotiated sexual practices within marriage. Such depictions resonate with contemporary consensual cuckolding, where trust, communication, and shared pleasure are central.

Today, cuckoldry has evolved from a symbol of male humiliation to a complex social and sexual phenomenon. It appears in adult entertainment, and discussions of alternative relationship models, reflecting changing attitudes toward masculinity, fidelity, and sexual expression. Societal acceptance is growing, particularly among younger generations, as open communication and diverse relationship structures become more common.
